BOOK REVIEW  (By Natasha 09/12/16) - The Jolly Christmas Postman by Janet & Allan Ahlberg

Summary

“The Jolly Christmas Postman” is about the Jolly Postman making his deliveries of Christmas presents and cards. Each delivery is based around characters from other nursery rhymes and stories, such goldilocks and the three bears, little red riding hood and the three little pigs. You also get actual letters to pull out of envelopes to accompany each delivery. It is also a rhyming story and has very colourful Christmas illustrations.

Review

I have personally been a fan of Janet and Allan Ahlberg stories since I was a kid. I have read, and loved, Each Peach Pear Plum, Happy Families (I loved the kids TV series they created for these), The Jolly Postman, Funnybones, Peepo and so many others. The writing and illustrations are so enticing for children and they bring all the characters from your favourite childhood stories and nursery rhymes to one place. Janet & Allan Ahlberg’s twist on these characters all coming together is what I love about their books. They really have a unique storytelling talent. The illustrations are bright and fun. You really feel the jolliness bouncing off the page.

This book is so much fun because it is interactive. The kids get to feel like they are the ones getting the letters because they get to take them out of the envelopes, and put them back again. You just can’t wait to see what the next surprise is on each page and it makes you feel all Christmasey.
