Crochet Christmas Santa Hats 2016

I finally got Kayleigh, Kameron and Korey’s Santa Hats finished for this Christmas. They were very straight forward. The kids all had different preferences for the yarn and length of the tail, which was good because it enables us to tell them apart. Korey opted for a long tail, Kameron opted for a short length and Kayleigh opted for a medium length. Although, none of them wanted any pictures or motifs on them. I started with the pom pom in Bernat Pipsqueak yarn, which I filled with toy stuffing, and moved onto the tail and main part of the hat, followed by the brim in white. For the red, the boys chose King Cole Cuddles Chunky and Kayleigh chose Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky.

I worked the hats in UK Treble Crochet/tr (US Double Crochet/dc), UK Half Treble Crochet/htr (US Half Double Crochet/hdc), along with working in the round. Therefore, as long as you know the sizes the hat needs to be and are confident with increasing in the round, you will crochet the hat quickly. I was able to complete one hat in a single evening.

Yarn

Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky (shade - Rose Red (313)).

1 x 100g (3.5oz/149yds/136m) balls.

Weight category: UK Chunky [US 5/Bulky/Chunky].

Tension/gauge: 14 stitches x 20 rows = 4″ (10cm) on size 6mm/UK 4 [US J/10] hook.

The crochet hook I used was a 6mm/UK 4 [US J/10].

I would give the Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky yarn a 5 out of 5 for the following reasons:-

- It was easy to work and worked up quickly;

- There is a large choice of colours available;

- The feel of it was extremely soft;

- The cost of yarn is very reasonable - I paid about £2.25 per 100g ball and you get a lot on a ball;

- Would I use this yarn again? YES, DEFINITELY.

King Cole Cuddles Chunky (shade - Red (299)).

1 x 50g (1.75oz/137yds/125m) balls.

Weight category: UK Chunky [US 5/Bulky/Chunky].

Tension/gauge: 14 stitches x 20 rows = 4″ (10cm) on size 6mm/UK 4 [US J/10] hook.

The crochet hook I used was a 6mm/UK 4 [US J/10].

I would give the King Cole Cuddles Chunky yarn a 2 out of 5 for the following reasons:-

- It was difficult to work up because the stitches were hard to see;

- There is a limited choice of colours available;

- The feel of it wasn’t as soft as you expect it to be and it reminds me of Sirdar Snuggly Snowflake Chunky feel;

- The cost of yarn is very expensive - I paid about £3.95 per 50g ball;

- Would I use this yarn again? NO.

Bernat Pipsqueak (shade - Whitey White 29005).

1 x 100g (3.5oz/119yds/109m) balls.

Weight category: UK Chunky [US 5/Bulky/Chunky].

Tension/gauge: 11 stitches x 16 rows = 4″ (10cm) on size 5.5mm/UK 5 [US I/9] hook.

The crochet hook I used was an 5.5mm/UK 5 [US I/9].

I would give the Bernat Pipsqueak yarn a 4 out of 5 for the following reasons:-

- It was slightly difficult to work up due to the stitches being hard to see because of the fluffiness;

- There is a small choice of colours available;

- The feel of it was supersoft and once washed looks and feels like fleece;

- The cost of yarn is slightly expensive - I paid about £3.90 per 100g ball but you get a lot on each ball and the softness is amazing;

- Would I use this yarn again? YES, DEFINITELY.

I hope this brings you #creativejoyandinspiration.
